Tips and ideas for hanging window treatments

There are many types of window treatments to choose from. Depending on how your window is constructed, some treatments may work better than others. Some of the treatments to choose from are drapes, cornices, blinds, mini-blinds, roman shades and vertical blinds just to name a few. All of these window treatments needs to installed, some require more elaborate steps than others. Here are some tips hanging window treatments.

Hanging window blinds

Custom window blinds can be expensive and impractical. Fortunately, there are window blinds which are pre-made, while they may be less attractive than custom blinds, they are a lot cheaper and they come in various sizes to fit a lot of standard sized windows. This idea can work for you if you are renting an apartment and don’t want to spend a fortune on your window treatment.

The key idea on pre-made window blinds is to take the measurement of the window very carefully and purchase the correct sized window blinds for you. The width of the blind should be a little less than the actual width of the window if you plan the blinds to be recessed within the window. Ensure that you have proper mounting materials and tools for the blinds. If you need to drill holes to mount the blinds bracket, ensure that you have the proper sized drill bits for the job.

Hanging drapes

Drapes are favorite in window treatments because they are classy and elegant. Hanging drapes is a very straightforward process, they are less complicated to hang than window blinds.

You will need a measuring tape, a screw driver and possibly a drill (depending on the mounting surface). Measure the width and length of the drape, according to your preferences. Purchase the drape according to your measurements. Choose a rod which is slightly longer than the width of the drape. Follow the mounting procedure for the rod, if your mounting surface is wood, then you won’t need the drill because you can simply force the mounting screws using just the strength of your arm. If you need to mount on concrete , then you will need the drill and an appropriately sized concrete drill bit.

Hanging roman shades

Roman shades adds elegance and beauty to the room and they are very effective in controlling the amount of light in the room as well. Installation of roman shades is bit like installing window blinds, measurement is key and there is very little room for error.

You have two option to mount roman shades. You can install them in a recessed way (inside the window, jamb to jamb) or outside the recesses of the window (bracket to bracket). If you will install jamb to jamb, you need to be very precise in the length and width of the roman shade. If you will install bracket to bracket, then the size and dimension of the roman shade is not of much consideration because any overlap between the shade and the window size is not going to be a problem.

After taking the measurement of the window, purchase the appropriate size of the roman shade according to your mounting preference. Roman shades typically comes with mounting materials such as screws and rods. If your mounting surface is concrete, you may need to drill holes to hold the bracket of the shade. Follow the mounting procedure for the roman shade, then test the shade to make sure that it is aligned properly.

Hanging window treatments can be a bit technical, and may require some tools. You need to assess your skill especially when mounting the brackets. Be careful when working with powertools.
